This year, I’ve created something special to share with you—a paper version of the iconic Filipino Parol. It’s a cherished Christmas tradition from my culture, and I’m thrilled to offer the SVG file for free until the end of the year. While you’ll need to check out, it won’t cost you a thing.
As I worked on this project, I found myself reflecting on what Christmas has meant to me over the years. These past few days, I’ve struggled to feel the Christmas spirit. Perhaps it’s because, as an adult and a vendor, the holiday season has become more about making sales than making memories. It’s a bittersweet realization that left me feeling a little heartbroken.
It’s also hard not to feel the weight of distance. My parents, siblings, friends, and the cultural traditions that shaped my childhood are thousands of miles away. This time of year makes me long for the festive celebrations I grew up with—the warmth of family, the sound of carolers, and the sight of parols lighting up the streets.
The parol, in particular, holds a special place in my heart. Its star-shaped design represents the Star of Bethlehem, a guiding light and symbol of hope. Creating a paper version of this beautiful decoration was my way of reconnecting with my roots and sharing a piece of my heritage with others.
If you’ve never made or displayed a parol before, now’s the perfect time to start. Don’t worry about being late to the game—Filipinos are known for keeping their Christmas decorations up well into January (we’ve got plenty of time, haha). I hope you enjoy making this craft as much as I enjoyed designing it.

Sharing some photos participants of my in-person class made last month:
Made by our youngest student, Paige. I believe she's just 9 years old and already so crafty!
Created by one of our students, who might just be a crafting enthusiast! She even brought her own markers—talk about being prepared. And just look at that intricate tail—absolutely stunning!
When you’ve finished your own parol, please tag me in your posts—I’d love to see your creations and how you’ve made them uniquely yours. Thank you for letting me share this part of my culture and my heart with you. Merry Christmas and happy crafting!
Love,
Deaney
